A New Local Sandwich Born in the “City of Plums,” Tanabee
The izakaya Shunsai Izakaya Zen in Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture created the “Tanabee Sandwich” with the hope of bringing more vibrancy to the region. Centered around a thick-cut pork loin cutlet, this katsu sandwich offers the satisfaction of a full meal while naturally expressing Tanabe’s local character through carefully selected regional ingredients. Loved by both tourists and locals, it has gradually spread through events and regional fairs, becoming a modern local specialty that tells the story of the area in a relaxed, approachable way.
Local Plums and Shiso Add a Refreshing Touch
The rich, thick-cut pork cutlet made from “Kishu Umebuta” is complemented by the gentle acidity of local plums, creating a surprising lightness despite its hearty volume. This balanced design allows people of all ages to enjoy it comfortably to the last bite. The bread comes from Pan au Tukur, a bakery in neighboring Shirahama, known for its slightly sweet loaf. Ingredients like plums and shiso are also sourced from local farmers in Tanabe, keeping most of the production within the Kinan region.
A New Tanabe Specialty Nurtured by Community Connections
This sandwich has been refined through collaboration with local university students, residents, and participation in community events. Its focus on local production and consumption reflects not just a product, but a deeper connection with the region itself. Unpretentious yet memorable, it continues to grow quietly as a dish that represents the present-day spirit of Tanabe.
